Tour of the Carrara Marble Quarries
Discover the enchanting world of the Carrara marble quarries and experience and adventure like no other. Michelangelo, Bernini, Canova and Rodin all spent time in Carrara, in the Apuan Alps, to source the marble for their world famous masterpieces. The Hotel Splendido invites you to explore this outstanding destination and marvel at its glistening cliffs and spectacular scenery.
The enchanting world of Michelangelo
Visiting the marble quarries in a 4x4 off road vehicle is a high-octane, thrilling experience. Only one hour from Portofino, you will explore places inaccessible to most visitors. Travel along steep, winding, roads, see trucks manoeuvring in the quarries at death-defying angles, and gaze in awe at dazzling landscapes.
Learn about ancient and modern methods of excavation as your private, multilingual guide drives you through the three main valleys of Carrara. Discover the renowned Michelangelo cave, where the great artist sourced his marble. Then climb up to a height of 1200m for spectacular views of the ocean and, on clear days, the island of Corsica in the distance.
Tasting Lardo di Colonnata
The tour pauses for a delicious, gastronomic break at a “larderia”—the chance to experience a renowned local delicacy: thinly sliced pork fat or "lardo di Colonnata IGP". See how this mouth-watering treat is cured to perfection in marble basins.
And there’s more…
To complete your experience, you can extend your excursion and visit a sculpture atelier and a marble workshop, as well as exploring the towns of Carrara and Pietrasanta.
Each 4x4 Off Road vehicle can hold up to 8 visitors. Please contact our concierge to enquire for details, rates and availability. | | |
