The language of wellness

Introduction  |  Programmes  | Glossary

To know more, to understand better, to explain to others the basic concepts of these disciplines that are less traditional, but whose roots are ancient…

Holistic
Derives from the Greek holos, which means “entire”, and considers the organism as a whole. This is why holistic medicine and philosophy try to harmonize a person’s emotional, social, physical and spiritual dimensions. Unlike traditional disciplines, in holistic thinking the individual is responsible for his own well-being and has the task of safeguarding his own equilibrium from harmful everyday habits. Holistic medicine embraces all the disciplines based on natural principles (like phytotherapy, flower therapy, and homeopathy), the search for the inner Self (yoga, rebirthing or relaxation techniques) or on our energetic structure to stimulate a process of self-healing or a spontaneous search for biodynamic equilibrium.

Aromatherapy
The therapeutic use of essential plant oils is very ancient in origin. The essences may be massaged into the skin, taken orally, or diluted in bath water, and they have numerous properties. Powerful bactericides, they are often used for circulatory and digestive problems and can act as sedatives or stimulants of the nervous system.

Ayurveda
Literally “the science of long life”, Ayurveda is a holistic system aimed at controlling life so as to prolong it and prevent illness. This Indian medicine born thousands of years ago – which makes it the oldest known wellness system – is not concerned solely with the physical health of the patient, but also with his mental, psychological, sensory and spiritual condition, as well as his ethical conduct: in fact, body and soul, physique and psyche cannot be separated.

Phytotherapy
Is the therapy that uses active vegetable principles in infusions, decoctions, macerations, powders, tinctures, creams, and compresses… The modern pharmacopoeia is derived from this ancient therapeutic technique. Phytotherapy – which has a gentle, harmonious and non-violent action on the organism – is the most ancient expression of human medicine, based on the use of medicinal plants for therapeutic purposes.

Flower Therapy
Conceived following the discoveries of the English doctor Edward Bach at the beginning of the 20th century, flower therapy exploits the extraordinary positive energies of flowers to help treat disturbances affecting the emotional sphere.

Reflexology or Zonal Massage
Is a therapy that arose from the discovery that on the surface of some zones of the body it is possible to find a map of the entire organism. By acting on these “reflex” zones you can bring benefit to the corresponding organ. It generally consists of a prolonged massage or stimulation of specific points in the feet, hands or ears.

Pilates - Matwork
A training method that aims to increase fluidity of movement and to strengthen the entire body
without creating excessive muscle mass. Performed free-style on a gym mat, the various exercises
make up an overall programme that involves the muscular system in its entirety while maintaining
co-ordination and flexibility.

Yoga
Yoga is an applied science that comes from the ancient Indian Vedic tradition. The practice helps to
keep body and mind in balance, and to create the right conditions to maintain health. Yoga includes
physical postures (asana), breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation.
